New figures reveal 15 year vivisection high

Home Office figures just released (23 July 2007) show that during 2006 the
number of animal experiments in Britain broke the three million barrier.
Only those experiments that potentially cause pain, suffering, distress or
lasting harm are counted. The latest figures represent the highest number of
animals sacrificed for 15 years and places Britain at the top of the
European cruelty league:

* All animal experiments up by 115,834 to 3,012,032
* Experiments with no anaesthetic up by 109,200 to 1,856,200.
* Poisoning experiments up by 27,400 to 420,500.
* Experiments on mice up 106,022 to 2,067,071
* Experiments on rats down 18,359 to 406,168
* Experiments on birds up 1,272 to 114,428
* Experiments on guinea pigs up 1,165 to 30,184
* Experiments on sheep up 7,048 to 36,377
* Experiments on cattle down 13,776 to 5,334
* Experiments on cats up 24 to 524
* Experiments on dogs down 25 to 7,595
* Experiments on primates down 448 to 4,204
* Experiment on fish up 41,212 to 274,066
* Radiation experiments on all animals up by 2,769 to 11968.
* Inhalation experiments on dogs up 702 to 732
* Experiments on GM animals up 77,900 to 1,035,343

Scientific reviews and the TGN1412 affair are highlighting the failures of
animal experiments and their lack of relevance to human medicine. The
growing toll of suffering and killing in British laboratories is testament
to the Government's cavalier approach to both science and animal protection,
and highlights New Labour's failure to fulfil its pledge to reduce animal
research that it made prior to coming to power in 1997.

Dr Dan Lyons, Uncaged's Campaigns Director, comments:
Significantly, there's a growing consensus across a wide range of opinion -
not just animal rights campaigners - that the Home Office is failing to
enforce the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. There are only a tiny
number of Inspectors, most of whom have a background in animal
experimentation. Not surprisingly, Inspectors have neither the resources nor
the inclination to examine the justifications and predictions put forward by
animal research applicants.

Consequently, the likelihood of useful results is exaggerated while often
severe animal suffering is overlooked and trivialised. For example, two
major research projects in the last decade have been approved on the basis
of claims in the application form that they would result in clinical trials
of pig organ transplants. But if Inspectors had bothered with the even the
most elementary scrutiny, such claims would clearly have been seen as
grossly exaggerated, as proved to be the case. In practice, hundreds of
thousands of animals are suffering severely in pointless, ill-conceived
experiments.

To make matters worse, a current Home Office review is seeking to weaken the
regulatory system yet further. Hiding behind the euphemism of 'Better
Regulation', the Home Office is in the process of implementing the drug
industry's demands for a reduction in both the information required in
project licences and reporting requirements. This will make it even more
difficult to conduct the so-called 'cost-benefit assessment' of
applications, which is supposed to be the cornerstone of the 1986 Act and is
meant to determine whether animal experimentation projects are legal and the
level of pain permitted. It will also further undermine public
accountability in this highly controversial area. As it is, our ongoing
opinion research currently shows that the public overwhelmingly believes
that animal experimentation laws are not properly enforced.

By intensifying their systematic bias towards the animal testing industry,
the Government is riding roughshod over the recommendations of its own
expert advisory committee and the public, who both wish to see effective
independent scrutiny of animal experimentation proposals and targeted action
towards its abolition. As an initial step, we need a debate in the House of
Commons to illuminate the role of the Animal Procedures Committee -
supposedly a key innovation of the 1986 Act - and why the Government is
choosing to ignore its mild recommendations for improvements in favour of
the demands of animal researchers to be a law unto themselves.
In the UK, restaurants will usually indicate which of their dishes is vegetarian and vegan.

There's still some confusion as to what vegetarians and vegans do and don't eat, partly because many people who call themselves vegetarian can sometimes turn a blind eye to the small print on labels. That packet of chewy sweets may get the better of them, even if they know there's gelatine lurking inside.
In the name of the law

There's no law, either at UK or EU level, that requires food to be labelled in terms of its suitability for vegetarians or vegans

Many vegetarians and vegans, however, want to be absolutely sure that they aren't consuming any product or by-product of slaughter or, in the case of vegans, any animal-derived product at all. This is made difficult by the fact that there's no law, either at UK or EU level, that requires food to be labelled in terms of its suitability for vegetarians or vegans. Such labelling is purely voluntary, and is left open to the interpretation of the manufacturer or retailer - unlike organic food, which is regulated by EU law and must meet certain standards before calling itself 'organic'.

However, by law, vegetarian and vegan foods, as with all foods, must not have misleading labelling, or the manufacturers can leave themselves open to prosecution, so you should be able to feel relatively confident that a product that's labelled as vegetarian or vegan is suitable.Click for moreUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6461549087392661437.post-39747017531273175502007-07-02T00:13:00.000-07:002007-07-02T00:15:11.052-07:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_rjLCIPKtYQg/Roil7cnPCWI/AAAAAAAAARs/tWkPA3vJROg/s400/edn_logo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082494620199225698" />
What is YOUR eco footprint?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6461549087392661437.post-58778791995691931162007-07-01T22:44:00.000-07:002007-07-02T00:05:39.198-07:00Vegan Society Trademark Holders win PETA Proggy Awards.Click for moreUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6461549087392661437.post-91236931884289432982007-06-29T23:01:00.000-07:002007-06-29T23:03:11.977-07:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_rjLCIPKtYQg/RoXx_MnPCHI/AAAAAAAAAP4/HgHdnfwFuAA/s400/MSpirulinaHeaderT.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5081733822577313906" />
The healthiest food is your best defense
The foods we eat are the first line of defense from the negative effects of lifestyle stress, pollution, radiation and toxic chemicals. Yet so many processed foods are nutritionally empty. They leave us vulnerable to poor health and low energy.

The good news is many essential nutrients recommended by experts to help protect our bodies are concentrated in Spirulina. It contains the most powerful combination of nutrients ever known in any grain, herb or food.

* World's highest beta carotene food reduces long term health risks.
Spirulina beta carotene is ten times more concentrated than carrots. So even if you don't eat the recommended 4 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day (most people eat only 1-2, including french fries), get your natural beta carotene insurance from spirulina to help support your body's defenses.
* 60% easy-to-digest vegetable protein without the fat and cholesterol of meat.
People are eating less meat and dairy protein because they want to lower fat, cholesterol, and chemicals in their diet. Spirulina is the highest protein food with all the essential amino acids and has only a few calories to keep your waistline where you want it.
* A rare essential fatty acid is a key to health.
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) in mother's milk helps develop healthy babies. Studies show nutritional deficiencies can block GLA production in your body, so a good dietary source of GLA can be important. Spirulina is the only other whole food with GLA.
* Iron for women and children's health.
Iron is essential to build a strong system, yet is the most common mineral deficiency. Spirulina is rich in iron, magnesium and trace minerals, and is easier to absorb than iron supplements.
* High in Vitamin B-12 and B Complex.
Spirulina is the highest source of B-12, essential for healthy nerves and tissue, especially for vegetarians.
* Unusual phytonutrients for health and cleansing.
Scientists are discovering the benefits of polysaccharides, sulfolipids & glycolipids, and the rainbow of natural pigments that give spirulina a deep green color. Green (chlorophyll), blue (phycocyanin) and orange (carotenoids) colors collect the sun's energy and power growth. Chlorophyll is a natural cleanser and is often referred to as nature's green magic.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6461549087392661437.post-47707951615335810672007-06-27T23:24:00.000-07:002007-06-27T23:31:07.899-07:00

Banana Ice Cream and Toasted Coconut Bites (Vegan, Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, Soy-Free) Mmmm Yummy Yummy.
METHOD:

Peel bananas and slice into ½ inch slices. At slaughter, the birds’ throats are slit and they are dropped into tanks of scalding-hot water—often while they are still conscious. It would be illegal for KFC to abuse dogs, cats, pigs, or cows in these ways.

KFC’s own animal welfare advisors have asked the company to take steps to eliminate these abuses, but KFC refuses to do so. Many advisors have now resigned in frustration.

Please join Pamela Anderson, Sir Paul McCartney, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, The Rev. Al Sharpton, and countless other kind people worldwide by not eating at KFC.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6461549087392661437.post-41224403537270582962007-06-24T23:12:00.000-07:002007-06-24T23:14:43.823-07:00<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_rjLCIPKtYQg/Rn9dPAXUdAI/AAAAAAAAAOE/a6Txh1XHhoo/s400/peta2006_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079881417074439170" />
"Almost half of New Zealand's greenhouse gases are from methane and nitrous oxide emissions caused by livestock farming. These gases contribute far more to global warming than all the carbon dioxide produced by cars and industry in this country. Methane is 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide a staggering 310 times! This makes the livestock industry the biggest polluter in New Zealand. Producing meat also wastes an enormous amount of water. International figures show that it takes 500 litres of water to produce 1 kilogram of potatoes, 2,000 litres to produce 1 kilogram of soybeans and up to 100,000 litres to produce 1 kilogram of feedlot beef."

Globally, the growth of the livestock sector is responsible for most of the deforestation that has and still is taking place. 30 per cent of the earth's land surface is now used by livestock or to grow feed crops for livestock.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6461549087392661437.post-56063967380161890942007-06-24T22:51:00.000-07:002007-06-24T22:57:49.688-07:00<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_rjLCIPKtYQg/Rn9YBQXUc_I/AAAAAAAAAN8/9txvzDrfM0k/s400/vegan+pride.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079875683293098994" />Garlic Potato Fries

GARLIC POTATO FRIES
Ingredients (use vegan versions):

2 medium-large potatoes
some oil (I used sesame)
garlic salt

Directions:

Cut the potatoes into slices with a crinkle cutter (this is just for looks really) and mix with the oil.
